The Vision for Education Foundation Pakistan and the College of Ophthalmology & Allied Vision Sciences (COAVS) at Mayo Hospital Lahore, affiliated with King Edward Medical University, have formed a strategic partnership to strengthen corneal transplantation services across Punjab.
The agreement reflects a growing effort by healthcare institutions and nonprofit organizations to expand access to sight-restoring procedures for patients with corneal diseases and injuries. Medical experts have long emphasized that greater access to donor corneas and specialized surgical services can significantly reduce the burden of avoidable blindness in the country.
As part of the collaboration, a batch of four donor corneas was provided to the Institute of Ophthalmology and COAVS, enabling transplant procedures for patients awaiting treatment. Live corneal transplant surgeries were also demonstrated during the event, allowing participants to observe the intricate procedures that can restore vision and improve quality of life.
Representatives from King Edward Medical University, the Punjab Human Organ Transplantation Authority, the Institute of Ophthalmology, and other healthcare organizations attended the ceremony, underscoring the initiative's broad institutional support.
The partnership is expected to strengthen corneal transplantation capacity across the province and create opportunities for future collaboration in pediatric eye health through integrated child health programs. Supporters of the initiative say the agreement marks a meaningful step toward expanding access to advanced ophthalmic care and reducing preventable loss in Punjab.
